This Mexican Crema substitute recipe is made with greek yogurt, making it a healthier version than the traditional one! It's super EASY to make, and ready in less than 5 minutes!
Traditional Mexican Crema is a cream based sauce that's drizzled over Mexican foods. It is slightly tangier, saltier, and thinner than sour cream, and it helps tame the spiciness of the chiles used in several Mexican dishes.
After testing several batches of this sauce, I think this Mexican Crema substitute came pretty close to the real thing! Of course it won't taste exactly the same, but it's super creamy and is slightly tangy, salty, and just has just a hint of sweetness.
I like the light-fresh taste this Crema has! It has just a few natural ingredients, including greek yogurt which is protein-rich and gut healthy!
Ingredients Used
Some of the Mexican Crema recipes I have found use mayonnaise as one of the ingredients. But I was determined to only use greek yogurt as a healthy base!
Since mustard is an ingredient in homemade mayo, I figured it might work in this Crema recipe. I only used a small amount of mustard, but I feel like it did give it a touch of a vinegary, tangy flavor!
I would recommend using whole milk plain Greek Yogurt (which is labeled either 4% or 5% fat). It's richer and creamier than non-fat greek yogurt! (You can also use sour-cream if that's what you have on hand.)
How to make Mexican Crema with Greek Yogurt
Making Mexican Crema is so easy! It takes less than 5 minutes to make. Here's how:
- Simply add all of your ingredients to a bowl, and whisk until everything is combined!
- Store in an airtight container, or Condiment Squeeze Bottle in the fridge, for up to 7 days.
As an option, you can add 1-2 tablespoon (or more) of milk or milk substitute to thin out the sauce for easy pouring.
I ended up adding 2 tablespoon of a plant-based milk (it's what I had on hand) and it was the perfect consistency for drizzling over food!
How to Use Mexican Crema Substitute:
Use this Mexican Crema substitute to drizzle over any of your Mexican dishes! Or you can use it on salads, or in place of sour cream on your meals.
I've used it on Chiles Rellenos Baked w/ Turkey Taco Meat, watch video HERE!
and Blackened Mahi-Mahi Fish Tacos, shown here:
